[Meet the Team]: Lacey the Service Dog
Meet my (@libraryordreaming’s) partner in crime: Lacey the Gluten Sniffing Service Dog!
I was diagnosed with celiac disease when I was 13, but my first few years attempting to go gluten free were horrible. Suddenly I had to learn about all the places that gluten can hide. Overnight I had to become an expert at reading food labels and a gluten detective in every aspect of my life. No more eating at my fave restaurants or friends’ houses. Every meal turned into a nightmare. Even my best attempts to stay gluten free were thwarted due to the insidious nature of gluten. Even things that were called “gluten free” turned out to be contaminated and made me sick.
In order to truly treat my celiac disease, I got a gluten detection service dog from the wonderful folks at Canine Specialty Training.
Lacey has been with me almost 5 years and she has truly changed my life! Having a service dog is more challenging that I ever could’ve imagined but Lacey is now my partner & I couldn’t live without her! She checks all my food, supplements, medicine, and household products to keep me safe. She has saved my life in every possible way & I love her beyond words!
Fun facts about Lacey:
- Rescue pup
- Has a nose powerful enough to detect down to 1 part per trillion (which is like a human being able to detect a teaspoon of sugar in two Olympic pools).
- Lives to sniff
- Hates water (even though she’s part lab)
- Official Couch Dog TM
- Birds & gluten are her mortal enemies
- Professional Book Sniffer (vintage books = best smells)
- Once nibbled on a precious antique book but we don't like to talk about that...
- Loves stealing food, especially powdered donuts
- Actually the best dog in the entire world (I don’t accept arguments here, sorry!)
